things i’m thinking on at the moment

Lately I’ve been feeling very nostalgic for a podcast that stole my heart.

Smart Mouths Podcast was a show that discussed a “roundup” of top news stories for the week, politics and world news, pop culture, and even had a show-closing segment called “WTF News,” which covered the week’s more unique news stories. Along with these, various fun sections of the show were for listeners to get to know the hosts in interesting ways (such as playing Screw-Marry-Kill, Two Truths and a Lie, and the “Hot Seat”) or to connect with listeners and be silly (Dr. Smart Mouths, Google That Shiz, and a brief but hilarious one titled Fruit or Naughty British Word). The hosts were all lovable, engaging, and had a lot of experience to share with the viewers, and as the weeks went on, they began to feel as close as old friends.

I started listening a few episodes after the pilot aired, after my friend notified me of its existence, and was hooked until the last moment and beyond, when they announced that due to scheduling issues and all the seven hosts’ lives changing in different ways, they would not be able to continue the show. I was devastated, heartbroken, but I understood where they were coming from and didn’t hold it against them.

Smart Mouths ran from 2009 to 2011 and was crucial in shaping how I looked at the world and inspiring my interest in world news rather than just local news. I miss the hosts and the show more every day, and frequently go back and listen to old episodes, even though the news isn’t new, just to be with that wacky cast of wonderful people again.

Ever since Smart Mouths, I haven’t really gotten into listening to podcasts. I have, however, always been interested in starting one of my own. I don’t know if there are any podcasts out today like Smart Mouths, but I really do doubt it. If I ever am able to pull together some friends to host such a podcast with me, I will do my absolute best to make a show just as engaging and lovable as Smart Mouths was for me, because, speaking from experience, we need more smart mouths in the world to combat the endless crap people try to feed us.
